Thank you so much for sharing what you'...Susan,

Thank you so much for sharing what you've learned. I'd recently come to suspect some of the above, but it is good to hear your personal experience. I've often been guilty of analysis paralysis but I know that sometimes my search for perfection is just an excuse for procrastination. Thank you for the advice about making the protaganist strong enough to carry the story. I recently had to make a change to one of my completed manuscripts because I learned another important rule - the hero or heroine must provide the solution to the dilemma of the story. It cannot be solved by anyone else.

Thanks again for sharing!Roxannehttp://mindfulbanter.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2967179224372520114.post-69409487540869840692012-02-26T18:35:52.562-06:002012-02-26T18:35:52.562-06:00I don't believe there is a wrong way to write:...I don't believe there is a wrong way to write:-) I've just learned so much in the past five years--and I hope I continue to learn! I also know I wouldn't have made it this far without both my critique group and my support group. That includes you two! Thanks, girls!Susan Ishmael-Pouloshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14902604968932512324noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2967179224372520114.post-64823393156474891002012-02-26T17:45:31.719-06:002012-02-26T17:45:31.719-06:00As you know I break a few of these rules - editing...As you know I break a few of these rules - editing as I go, obsessing about word count since my book is on the long side, and having people edit as I finish chapters. Granted, those things DO make the writing process for my first draft longer, but I am almost done and my rough draft is really draft #634, so it should be about ready to submit when I type 'the end.'

I'm not sure THIS book could have been written any other way, though my others were. Many of the writers I admire most are 'edit-as-you-go' sorts, so I think that is just how some of us compose. I'm not sure there is a wrong way, provided you end up with a finished book in the end.

I don't think my book would be half as good today if I hadn't let some key people look at it earlier, though there certainly can be a danger in writing by committee, and I certainly wouldn't advise it if you have any difficulty picking and choosing what advice is really in the best interest of your story.

I can't wait to see how your book transforms through all this, and I am relieved that word count is on your list of things that don't matter so much. :-)Kim Bullockhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06100854132576647442noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2967179224372520114.post-80876124562048166932012-02-26T17:09:03.947-06:002012-02-26T17:09:03.947-06:00This is all spot-on advise, Susan.
